Your Guide to the Rules of Roulette

The roulette table is one of the most popular games in a casino. Whenever a player approaches the roulette wheel, he or she can usually unwind and watch as the wheel stops spinning on their favor. However, simple as the game might sound, there are actually a few roulette rules that you are expected to know as you place your bet on the wheel.

Roulette Rules on Payouts The first type of roulette rule is the roulette payouts system. Since there are different bets in roulette, there are also different payout percentages. Those percentages depend on the probability of the ball dropping on the bet's favor.

Here is the list of roulette rules concerning bets and payouts:

Betting on a single-number, also known as a straight-up bet, gives 35 to 1. A two-number bet (split) gives 17 to 1. A three-number bet (street) gives 11 to 1. A four-number bet (corner) gives 8 to 1. A six-number bet gives a payout of 5 to 1. An outside dozen (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) bet gives 2 to 1. Red, Black, Odd and Even bets give 1 to 1.

To easily remember roulette rules on payouts, note that payout bets are related with the number 35. For example, a split bet has a 17:1 ratio because the number 17 is the approximate quotient when 35 is divided by two. This also applies to all the remaining inside bets.

Roulette Rules on the Table The difference between roulette rules and roulette etiquette is this: Following roulette rules is maintaining order and consistency throughout the game, and following etiquette is doing what other people expects of you. Hence, here is a set of roulette rules on how to act on the table:

You are required to avail of color-coded chips before you place any bets. There are stalls that trade your chips for color-coded ones. This is to avoid confusion among the other player's chips. However, as soon as you have won, the dealer pays you back with the same color-coded chips. You are not allowed to cash them directly. Instead, you are to return to the stall and replace them with ordinary casino chips.

Before the croupier spins the wheel, you have at most one minute to place your bets on the table. The croupier is to say "No more bets" before he or she spins the wheel. Then when the ball drops to a certain slot, the dealer pays the bets to the winner. You are only allowed to touch your chips when the dealer has finished paying all of the winners.

Remember that these roulette rules are created by the casino, and everyone is obliged to follow casino rules once you step inside. Do not get flustered when the rules are not in your favor - after all, rules are made to maintain an orderly gaming experience for everyone, not to cater to an individual's needs.
